Languages and who you can see

We want to be direct about language. Many people in Mangaluru would like therapy in Tulu or Kannada, but none of our clinical psychologists lists either at present. Ms. Janvi Khokhar and Ms. Kamakshi Sabharwal offer therapy in English and Hindi, and both are shown below. Our psychiatrist Dr. Samarth S Shetty speaks Tulu and Kannada, and Dr. Divya Gurunathan and Dr. Pooja Rani speak Kannada, for assessment and treatment. If you want talk therapy and your first language is Tulu or Kannada, we can offer therapy in English or Hindi alongside a psychiatrist in your language, or start with the psychiatrist alone.

Living and working in Mangaluru

  • Which tongue for the session? People in Mangaluru commonly handle English well, and some say painful things more easily in it because it carries less family weight. Others can only name shame or dread in Tulu or Kannada. Neither is wrong; try a session and tell us if it jars.
  • Exams and expectations. Student clients most often bring exam nerves, putting things off, loneliness and the weight of what the family hopes for. Hour-long weekly sessions at a protected time fit between lectures and labs, and they continue over holidays at home.
  • Family overseas or in another city. Coastal Karnataka has many households where a parent, spouse or child works far away. Distance can bring guilt and strain, and a psychologist can help you work out what you need from the relationship and how to ask.

Talk therapy for people in Mangaluru and nearby towns

People in smaller towns around Mangaluru often have limited access to a clinical psychologist, and online sessions widen the choice. We are open about language: therapy with our psychologists is in English or Hindi, and we do not offer it in Tulu or Kannada at present. If that matters to you, you can start with a Tulu- or Kannada-speaking psychiatrist and add therapy later. Students may prefer a fixed weekly slot away from lectures; people who work shifts may prefer late evenings.

If you are a student living away from home, tell your psychologist how your week is arranged, including exams and holidays. A plan that survives a busy fortnight is better than one that assumes no interruptions. If you have an exam or a trip, tell your psychologist in advance, and agree whether to skip, shorten or move that session.

Concerns people in Mangaluru bring

Our clinical psychologists hear about these most often. Each page covers signs, assessment and support.

What working with a psychologist online looks like

Most people start with one long conversation rather than a questionnaire. The psychologist wants to hear what brought you, what a bad week looks like, and what you would like to be different in three months. From there they suggest a method. Worry and low mood are often approached through cognitive behavioural therapy, where you and the psychologist trace how a situation leads to a thought, a feeling and a reaction. For compulsions the usual route is gradual exposure to feared situations without performing the ritual. Sessions run weekly, and small experiments between meetings, such as keeping a worry log, matter as much as the hour itself. A poor connection is handled by switching to a phone call.

When therapy is not the whole answer

A psychologist works with talk and practice, not prescriptions. When the picture includes marked sleep loss, a sudden change in appetite, thoughts of self-harm or symptoms that look like bipolar disorder or ADHD, adding a psychiatrist is sensible, and the referral stays within Mindly with your say-so. You do not retell your whole story to a stranger. For a plain comparison of the roles see how psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors differ.

Common questions

Does a psychologist here offer Tulu or Kannada?

Not now, as no psychologist lists either. Our psychiatrists can consult in Tulu or Kannada, and talk therapy is offered in English or Hindi.

Is there a centre in Mangaluru I could visit?

No. Mindly runs only online, with no centre or walk-in desk anywhere.

What separates the two professions?

Psychologists give talk therapy and do not prescribe. Psychiatrists are doctors who diagnose and prescribe, and many clients meet both.

How many months will it take?

That depends on the difficulty. Some feel better within a few months of weekly meetings, and others need longer; the plan is reviewed with you.

Can I take sessions from a hostel?

Yes when a quiet spot exists. Students often use a study room or step outside with headphones.
