How depression is treated

The right treatment depends on how severe the depression is and how it affects your life.

  • Talk therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), helps you change thought and behaviour patterns that keep low mood going.
  • Antidepressant medicine, prescribed by a psychiatrist, can lift mood and help with sleep, appetite and energy. It often takes a few weeks to work.
  • Daily routines: regular sleep, activity and time with other people support both therapy and medicine.
  • For moderate or severe depression, a combination of medicine and therapy is often recommended.

What treatment looks like at Mindly Health

You start with a free pre-consultation call. Your psychiatrist then assesses your mood, sleep, appetite, energy and daily life, explains what they find, and agrees a plan with you. A clinical psychologist can join for talk therapy, and your plan is reviewed as you improve.

Common questions

How long does depression treatment take?

It varies. Many people start to feel better within a few weeks of starting treatment, but a full course often lasts months. Your psychiatrist reviews your progress and adjusts the plan with you.

Will I need medicine?

Not always. For milder depression, talk therapy may be enough. For moderate or severe depression, a psychiatrist often recommends medicine, alone or with therapy. Never start or stop a medicine without asking your psychiatrist.

Can depression be treated online?

Yes. A psychiatrist can assess depression, explain the options and review your progress by video. Research on online therapy for depression shows results similar to in-person therapy.

What if I have thoughts of harming myself?
