What anxiety therapy involves

Most anxiety therapy uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). You learn to notice anxious thoughts, test them against what actually happens, and face feared situations step by step instead of avoiding them. Sessions are usually weekly, and you practise between sessions.

How to choose an anxiety therapist

  • Check that they are a clinical psychologist, ideally RCI registered.
  • Ask which therapies they use for anxiety and what a course of sessions looks like.
  • Choose someone you can talk to in your own language.
  • Look for a service that can bring in a psychiatrist if you need one.
