Is it anxiety or stress?

Stress is a response to a pressure and usually eases when the pressure passes. Anxiety keeps going without a clear cause, or long after the cause has gone. Only a clinician can tell which one you have.

How they differ

  • Stress has a clear trigger, such as a deadline or an exam, and eases when the trigger passes.
  • Anxiety is worry that stays, feels hard to control and spreads to many parts of life.

Generalised anxiety disorder, the most common form, means worry about everyday things that is excessive, hard to control and present on most days for six months or more.

Signs that point to anxiety

  • excessive worry on most days
  • trouble controlling the worry
  • restlessness or feeling on edge
  • tiredness, muscle tension and poor sleep
  • irritability

When to get help

Talk to a doctor if worry stops you working, studying or sleeping, or if it has lasted for weeks. A psychiatrist asks how long it has lasted and what it is about, and checks for other causes such as thyroid problems, substance use or depression.

What helps

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a first-line talk therapy for anxiety. A psychiatrist can also say whether medicine would help.

Common questions

Can stress turn into anxiety?

Long periods of stress can lead to anxiety in some people. If worry stays after the pressure has passed, it is worth talking to a doctor.

Is anxiety treatable?

Yes. Therapy, medicine, or both can help, and a psychiatrist can assess which care suits you.
