Forgetfulness or dementia? Signs to watch for
Occasional forgetfulness is common at any age. Dementia is different: memory loss and confusion that get worse over time and start to affect daily life. If you or a family member notice such changes, see a doctor, because some causes of memory problems are treatable.

Normal forgetfulness
Forgetting a name or where you put your keys, then remembering later, is common and does not by itself mean dementia.
Signs that may point to dementia
- forgetting recent events or repeating the same questions
- getting lost in familiar places
- trouble with words or following conversations
- difficulty managing money, medicines or familiar tasks
- changes in mood, personality or behaviour
Other causes of memory problems
Depression, poor sleep, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, some medicines and infections can also cause forgetfulness or confusion. These can often be treated, which is why a check is worthwhile.
When to get help
See a doctor if memory or thinking problems are new, getting worse, or affect daily life. A psychiatrist can assess memory, mood and behaviour and plan care, including support for the family.

Common questions
Is dementia a normal part of ageing?
No. Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain. It is more common in older people, but it is not a normal part of ageing.
Can depression look like dementia?
Yes. Depression in older people can cause poor concentration and memory, which is why an assessment looks at both.
How can families help?
Keep routines steady, stay patient, and ask a doctor about support and safety at home.
