Psychosis and schizophrenia: early signs and treatment

Psychosis means losing touch with reality, for example hearing voices or holding strong beliefs that are not shared by others. Schizophrenia is one condition that can cause it. Both are treatable, and getting help early leads to better recovery.

Signs of psychosis

  • hearing, seeing or sensing things that others do not (hallucinations)
  • strong beliefs that are clearly false, such as being watched or controlled (delusions)
  • confused or disorganised speech or thinking
  • unusual behaviour, or being very agitated or very withdrawn

Early changes people notice

  • pulling away from family and friends
  • a drop in work or study performance
  • trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • suspiciousness, or a change in how the person talks and cares for themselves

Treatment

Treatment usually combines medicine with psychological and social support, including help for the family. Most people respond to treatment, and many recover well, especially when care starts early and continues.

How to help

  • Stay calm and listen without arguing about what the person sees or believes.
  • Encourage them to see a psychiatrist, and offer to go along.
  • Do not blame them or the family. These are medical conditions.

Common questions

Is schizophrenia the same as split personality?

No. Schizophrenia does not mean split personality. It is a condition that affects thinking, perception and emotions.

Can people with schizophrenia recover?

Many people recover well with continuing treatment and support. Early treatment improves outcomes.

Can psychosis happen for other reasons?

Yes. It can occur in bipolar disorder, severe depression, after childbirth, with substance use, or with a medical illness, so a psychiatrist should assess the cause.
