Languages and who you can see
We want to be clear about what we can offer today. Many people in Kolkata would like therapy in Bengali, but none of our clinical psychologists lists Bengali at present. Ms. Janvi Khokhar and Ms. Kamakshi Sabharwal offer therapy in English and Hindi, and both are shown below. Our psychiatrist, Dr. Dhritiman Das, can see you in Bengali for assessment and treatment. If you want talk therapy and Bengali is your first language, we can set up therapy in English or Hindi alongside a psychiatrist who speaks Bengali, or you can start with the psychiatrist alone. Tell us what you prefer.

Living and working in Kolkata
- Which language? Many Kolkata residents are fluent in English and find it easier to talk about painful feelings in it, because the words carry less family history. Others can describe shame or fear only in Bengali. There is no right answer. Try a first session in the language you choose and change if it does not feel right.
- Pressure at work, home and in between. People who come to therapy in Kolkata often describe the strain of caring for ageing parents, work that spills into evenings, and expectations from extended family about marriage, money and careers. A psychologist can help you sort out which pressures are yours and which are inherited, and set boundaries you can keep.
- A private space for sessions. Not everyone has a private room, especially in shared family homes. Tell your psychologist at the start, and plan around it: a headset, a walk with your phone, a quiet hour, or a session from a friend's place. Sessions are confidential.
- Long commutes. A trip across the city can eat an evening. Online sessions remove the commute entirely, so the slot can be kept even in a busy week.
- In an emergency. Mindly is not an emergency service. If you or someone else in Kolkata is in immediate danger, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital. Tele-MANAS (14416) is a free national helpline, available at any hour.
Concerns people in Kolkata bring
The concerns below are among those our clinical psychologists see most often from people across India. Each page explains the signs, how it is assessed and what support can look like.
What therapy sessions involve
Early sessions are for listening. The psychologist asks about your history and the situations that set things off, and together you decide on goals. Methods follow from the problem: cognitive behavioural work for anxious or low states, exposure-based work for obsessions and compulsions, and emotion-regulation skills where feelings overwhelm. Meetings are normally weekly for about an hour, and every few weeks the two of you check whether life is actually changing. You are free to say that an approach is not helping, and the psychologist will adjust.

Adding a psychiatrist to therapy
For many people talk therapy is enough. Where symptoms are severe, where sleep and appetite have collapsed, or where a diagnosis such as bipolar disorder is in question, a medical assessment adds something therapy cannot. Psychologists cannot prescribe, so the next step is a Mindly psychiatrist, introduced with your consent. The guide to the three professions sets out who does what.

Common questions
Can I have therapy in Bengali?
Not at the moment with a clinical psychologist, because none lists Bengali. Dr. Dhritiman Das, a psychiatrist, consults in Bengali, and therapy is available in English or Hindi.
Is there a clinic in Kolkata I can visit?
No. Mindly is online-only and has no clinic or walk-in service in Kolkata.
Do psychologists prescribe medicine?
No. Only psychiatrists, who are medical doctors, prescribe. Your psychologist can refer you to a Mindly psychiatrist.
Can I change my therapist if it is not working?
Yes. Tell us. Finding the right fit matters, and we would rather you change than stop.
How private is an online session?
Sessions are confidential. Please use a private room and headphones where you can, and tell us if privacy at home is difficult.
