Languages and who you can see
Therapy depends on being able to say what you really feel, so language matters. Ms. Liji Vijayan, a clinical psychologist on our team, lists Malayalam and English, and she is the person you would see for therapy in Malayalam. She is the only psychologist on our team who lists Malayalam, so we confirm her availability on your free call and tell you plainly if there is a wait. If you want a psychiatrist as well, Dr. Divya Gurunathan consults in Malayalam, and the two can work together with your consent.

Living and working in Kochi
- Therapy in the language of home. For many people in Kochi, Malayalam is the only language in which they can talk about shame, grief or anger without feeling that they are performing. Therapy in Malayalam lets you use your own words, including the mixed Malayalam and English most people speak at work.
- When someone you love is far away. Long separations from family members who work abroad can bring loneliness, guilt and strain between partners or parents and children. These are everyday reasons people come to therapy, and a psychologist can help you work out what you need from the relationship and how to say it.
- A private space. Online sessions let you attend from home without anyone seeing you walk into a clinic. If you share a house, tell your psychologist at the start, and plan a quiet time, a headset or a walk with your phone.
- In an emergency. Mindly is not an emergency service. If you or someone else in Kochi is in immediate danger, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital. For free support at any hour, Tele-MANAS (14416) is available nationwide.
Concerns people in Kochi bring
The concerns below are among those our clinical psychologists see most often from people across India. Each page explains the signs, how it is assessed and what support can look like.
What therapy sessions involve
A first session lets you describe what brought you and lets your psychologist explain how they would work. After one or two sessions they suggest an approach, such as cognitive behavioural therapy for worry and low mood, exposure and response prevention for OCD, or skills-based therapy for intense emotions and relationships. Sessions are usually weekly, about an hour long, and are reviewed so that you can see whether things are changing. You can tell your psychologist at any point if something is not helping. Between sessions your psychologist may suggest small tasks, such as noting when worry rises or trying a breathing or sleep routine, because change usually comes from practice outside the hour. If you use Malayalam in session but prefer English for forms or written exercises, say so, and your psychologist will adapt the material. Tell us as well if your connection is unreliable, as a phone call can sometimes stand in for video.

Adding a psychiatrist to therapy
Some people do well with therapy alone. If sleep or appetite have changed a lot, if you have thoughts of harming yourself, or if the picture suggests bipolar disorder, ADHD or severe OCD, a psychiatrist can assess you medically and prescribe if needed. Psychologists do not prescribe. Because both work at Mindly, your psychologist can refer you inside the team, with your consent. Read how psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors differ.
