Why Hindi matters for psychosis and schizophrenia
Psychosis, such as hearing voices or holding fixed beliefs that others do not share, is often first understood in Hindi-speaking families through other frames: upari badha, jaadu-tona, stress, or a person being "pagal". These explanations delay treatment, and the word pagal is deeply hurtful. A Hindi-speaking clinician can explain, in terms a family accepts, that psychosis is a medical condition that responds to treatment and that recovery is realistic. Five Mindly clinicians speak Hindi and list psychotic disorders or schizophrenia. They can speak to the person and the family together, or separately, which is often essential to keep treatment going.
What a first consultation in Hindi looks like
A first consultation in Hindi may involve both the person and a trusted relative. Your psychiatrist will ask about experiences such as voices, suspicion or changes in sleep and behaviour, how long they have lasted, and what has helped. They will explain what is happening, discuss antipsychotic medicine and what to expect from it, and talk about how family can support recovery. If there is any risk to safety, they will tell you what to do straight away.
Before your first Hindi consultation
If you are a relative, note what changes you have seen, when they started, and anything that has helped or made things worse. Bring any past prescriptions. If the person is willing, they should be in the room; if not, you may call us first for guidance. If anyone is in danger, call 112.
What online care for psychosis and schizophrenia involves
Care for psychosis begins with understanding what the person has experienced, how long, and whether substances, medical illness or mood disorder contribute. Treatment usually centres on antipsychotic medicine, with careful attention to side effects, together with psychological and family support and help to return to work or study. Regular reviews check symptoms, sleep and physical health. Families are given a clear explanation and a plan for warning signs. If someone needs urgent or in-person care, your psychiatrist will say so and help you arrange it.
Psychiatrist or psychologist for psychosis and schizophrenia?
Psychosis needs a psychiatrist, who diagnoses and prescribes. A psychologist can add therapy, rehabilitation and family work as recovery progresses. Read how psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors differ. Psychiatrists prescribe; psychologists provide therapy and do not prescribe.

Common questions
Is psychosis the same as schizophrenia?
No. Psychosis is a set of experiences, such as hallucinations and delusions, that can occur in several conditions. Schizophrenia is one of them. A psychiatrist will assess which applies.
Can someone recover from psychosis?
Many people do recover well with treatment and support, and some have a single episode. Staying with treatment and having family support improve the outlook.
The person does not think they are unwell. How do we get help?
This is common, because the experiences feel real. A relative can call us first for guidance on how to approach the person gently. Please call 112 if anyone is in danger.
Can psychosis be managed by video?
Ongoing review and medicine management can work well by video. If someone needs in-person or hospital care, your psychiatrist will say so and help you plan.
