Why Hindi matters for depression
Depression in Hindi is often described by what it does to a person, not by its name: man nahi lagta, udaasi, kuch accha nahi lagta, or "bas thak gaya hoon". Many families hear these as laziness or a bad phase, and many people hear them that way themselves. Speaking to a clinician in Hindi lets you describe the heaviness, the loss of interest and the poor sleep in your own words, and lets the clinician answer in words your family can also understand. Hindi-speaking households often include several generations, so the explanation of what depression is, and that it is treatable, tends to be needed at the dinner table as much as in the consultation.
What a first consultation in Hindi looks like
A first Hindi consultation for low mood looks at how long it has lasted, how sleep and appetite have changed, and whether you have lost interest in things you used to enjoy. Your clinician will ask about thoughts of not wanting to live, as a routine part of every depression assessment, and will tell you what support is available straight away. A plan may include therapy, medicine, or both, explained in Hindi.
Before your first Hindi consultation
Think about the last two weeks: sleep, appetite, energy, interest in things you used to enjoy. Make a list of medicines you take or have taken before. If you are willing, tell a family member in advance so that they can give you a quiet room and some privacy for the call.
What online care for depression involves
Care for depression begins with an assessment of mood, sleep, appetite, energy and any thoughts of self-harm, and of whether physical illness or another condition contributes. Options include talk therapies such as CBT and behavioural activation, medicine such as antidepressants, or both, depending on severity. Your psychiatrist explains how long antidepressants take to work and what side effects to look out for. Regular video reviews check whether the plan is working and adjust it, and you are told in advance what to do if you feel worse.
Psychiatrist or psychologist for depression?
A psychologist can lead talk therapy for mild to moderate depression. A psychiatrist is the right first step if depression is severe, has lasted a long time, has not responded to earlier treatment, or comes with thoughts of self-harm. Read how psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors differ. Psychiatrists prescribe; psychologists provide therapy and do not prescribe.

Common questions
Is udaasi the same as depression?
Sadness is a normal feeling. Depression is when low mood, loss of interest and tiredness last most of the day, nearly every day, for two weeks or more and affect work or relationships. A clinician can help you tell the difference.
Which Mindly clinicians treat depression in Hindi?
The clinicians listed above speak Hindi and list depression or mood disorders on their profiles. After a free call we match you to the one whose training and availability fit your needs.
Will I have to take medicine?
Not necessarily. For milder depression, talk therapy may be enough. Medicine is considered when depression is moderate or severe, or when therapy alone has not helped. Your psychiatrist will go through the options with you.
I do not want my family to know. Is that possible?
Your consultations are confidential. You choose whether to tell family and who to involve. Our team will not contact your family without your agreement, except in rare situations where someone's safety is at serious risk.
