Why Hindi matters for OCD

OCD is easy to miss in Hindi-speaking homes because it can look like piety, cleanliness or carefulness. Repeated hand-washing may be called safai, long rituals may be called puja-path, and repeated checking may be called being savdhan. The difference is distress: with OCD the thoughts are unwanted, the ritual feels compulsory, and the relief is short. Seven of our clinicians speak Hindi and list OCD, which is the widest choice we offer in any language. Talking in Hindi matters for the intrusive thoughts themselves, which are often about contamination, religion, harm or sex. These are hard to say in any language, and easier to say in the one you think in.

What a first consultation in Hindi looks like

In a first Hindi consultation your clinician will ask what thoughts bother you, what you do to feel safe again, and how many hours a day it takes. You do not need to say the most embarrassing thought in the first minute. Treatment usually centres on exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of CBT, sometimes with medicine. Your clinician will explain ERP in Hindi and agree the pace with you.

Before your first Hindi consultation

Jot down your main fears, the rituals that follow, and roughly how many hours a day they take. You do not need to prepare a perfect account. A list of triggers, such as door locks, hands, cooking or religious practices, is enough. If any intrusive thoughts feel too hard to write, you can say them aloud or save them for a later session.

What online care for OCD involves

Care for OCD starts with mapping obsessions and compulsions, and how much time and distress they cause. The main talk therapy is exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of CBT in which you face feared triggers in graded steps without performing the ritual. Many triggers are at home, so ERP suits video well. A psychiatrist may add an SSRI for moderate or severe OCD, often at higher doses than for depression and with patience, since benefit can take weeks. Reviews track symptoms with a rating scale so that progress is visible.

Psychiatrist or psychologist for OCD?

ERP is usually led by a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist trained in it. See a psychiatrist if OCD is severe, if depression or tics are also present, or if you want to consider medicine; many people see both. Read how psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors differ. Psychiatrists prescribe; psychologists provide therapy and do not prescribe.

Common questions

Is washing my hands a lot always OCD?

No. Some people wash a lot for good reasons. It points to OCD when the urge is driven by unwanted fear, feels impossible to resist, and takes up a large part of your day.

What is ERP, and can it be done online in Hindi?

ERP is a type of CBT where you face feared situations in small steps without doing the ritual. It works well by video, because many triggers are at home. Your clinician guides each step in Hindi and sets tasks between sessions.

Are my religious or sexual intrusive thoughts a sign that I am a bad person?

No. Intrusive thoughts are a common feature of OCD, and having them says nothing about your character. Clinicians hear them often and will not judge you.

Should I see a psychiatrist or a psychologist for OCD?

Both treat OCD. Psychologists lead talk therapy such as ERP. Psychiatrists assess you medically and can prescribe medicine. Many people see both, and our team can advise you after your free call.
