Exam stress: signs for students and parents
Some pressure before exams is normal. Exam stress is a concern when it brings constant dread, poor sleep, physical symptoms or hopelessness that last, or when a student talks about not wanting to live. Calm support at home, rest and early help from a doctor make a difference.

Signs of exam stress
- constant worry or dread about exams
- trouble sleeping, headaches or stomach upset
- irritability, tearfulness or pulling away from friends
- being unable to concentrate or study
- losing appetite, or eating much more than usual
For students: what can help
- Break studying into small, planned blocks with rest in between.
- Sleep, eat and move your body regularly.
- Talk to someone, such as a parent, friend, teacher or counsellor.
- Remember that one exam does not decide your whole life.
For parents: what can help
- Listen first, and ask how your child is feeling, not only about marks.
- Avoid constant comparison with other children.
- Keep routines calm, with time for rest and play.
- Take talk of hopelessness or self-harm seriously.
When it is more than stress
If low mood, panic, severe sleep problems or hopelessness last for more than two weeks, or the student stops functioning, see a doctor. Anxiety and depression are treatable. India's Supreme Court issued guidelines in July 2025 on protecting the mental health of students in coaching and college settings.
