How to talk to your family about mental health
Choose a calm moment, say what you have noticed in plain words, and ask for one specific thing, such as coming with you to a consultation. Many families listen better when they hear how it affects daily life than when they hear a label.
Last updated 2 November 2026
Before you start
- Pick a quiet time, not during an argument or a meal.
- Decide what you want from them: to listen, to help you book a consultation, or to come with you.
- Note a few examples they will recognise, such as poor sleep, low energy or trouble at work or study.
What you can say
- "I have not been sleeping well for weeks, and I am finding it hard to work."
- "I would like to talk to a doctor who understands this."
- "This is a health problem, like blood pressure or diabetes. It is not weakness."
If they dismiss it
- Do not argue. Give them time, and come back to it later.
- Share a short, reliable source, such as one of our guides.
- Ask a relative or friend you trust to join the conversation.
- Remember that an adult can see a psychiatrist on their own.
Why it can feel hard
Shame and fear of what others will say stop many people from asking for help. It does not mean your family does not care. They may simply not have the words yet.
If you are worried about someone else
See our guide on how to support someone who feels hopeless. If they may be in danger, call 112 or Tele-MANAS on 14416.

Common questions
Can I see a psychiatrist without telling my family?
Adults can consult a psychiatrist on their own. What you share is confidential, with limited exceptions described in our Privacy Policy.
Should I bring a family member to the first session?
You can. Many people find it helps, and some prefer to come alone first. Tell our team at the pre-consultation call.
